ABSTRACT
Measuring port efficiency and setting parameters for its measurement is essential for a port operator, giving it increasing importance to compare with similar competitors, facilitating timely management decision-making. The objective of this research was to compare different container cargo ports of Panama with the ports of the Central American Caribbean, Colombia and the Greater Antilles, close to the Panama Canal, in order to learn about the characteristics and best practices of the region's leading ports. For the development of this research, The Envelopment Data Analysis (DEA) was applied, at a constant scale, with orientation to inputs, resulting in ports near the Panama Canal not all efficient compared to those distant from it. Finally, proposals for best practices were developed that Panamanian ports must implement to be even more competitive in the region.
