ABSTRACT:
In recent decades, the disproportionate use of water has become one of the main problems worldwide, especially in the Latin American and Caribbean region. For this reason, some governments have developed initiatives to encourage the population to make rational use of water in the different economic sectors. One of these initiatives is the implementation of advanced technologies to improve water management in agricultural systems since the agricultural sector represents one of the main consumers of this resource. This work proposes the implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for the design of an
irrigation system that minimizes the total water consumption in crop irrigation systems by optimizing the programming of the system's operating time, considering the needs hydric of plants and environmental conditions. The proposed problem is represented by a linear programming problem that is solved using mathematical and simulation tools. The results presented show that, compared to traditional irrigation systems, the proposed algorithm uses less water when optimizing irrigation time, guaranteeing at all times the minimum water requirement of the plants.
